Kaitake FC Top Soccer Club

Published September 15, 2019

As the soccer season comes to an end, local men’s football club, Kaitake fc, celebrates a successful season that was unexpected to say the least. As a newly formed team, the aim of this season was to have fun and field enough players each week to compete in the Taranaki Men’s Division 1 league. However, the club and its location enticed some top class players such as ex professional, Paul Cunningham (Oakura), who played most recently for Team Taranaki and striker, James Bevington (Okato), who was one of the regions top goal scorers in 2014 & 2015. Along with ex semi-pro coach Billy Charlton (Oakura), the team turned out to be unbeatable and have gone on to win the league and Challend Trophy. Not only that, they are also in the Cup semi-final looking to complete ‘the domestic treble’, which is 3 trophies - League, Nimmos Cup and Challenge Trophy.

The club was set up by local residents as a way to continue playing the sport they all love whilst not sacrificing family time but it has become so much more than that. Club Chairman, Mike Maxim explains: “the club has really brought the community together. Local businesses such as Butlers Reef, High Tide, Vertech, Cunningham Construction and BTW have all been pivotal in helping us get going. We’ve also seen crowds of 200+ at some of the nail biting games which is incredible to see from such a small village. We hope that by having an adult soccer team in Oakura, more children will be enticed to play soccer at all ages. We hope to also add a woman’s team in the near future but would need more volunteers to make that happen.”

Let’s see what next season brings! Visit their Facebook page for more information on how to get involved and upcoming fixtures. Facebook.com/kaitakefc
