Waireka Cemetery gets Upgrade

Published August 08, 2013

Waireka Cemetery enters a new phase in its existence with NPDC replacing the lower boundary fence, removing the centre fence and putting in a new service road and gate to the lower cemetery area – all with the intent of opening up the area for new burials in the future.

The lower cemetery area has been grazed for as long as I can remember and stock have caused considerable damage to the few headstones in the lower area.

The new wooden fences will protect these grave sites.  It remains to be seen whether the clumsy post and rail fencing around the grave sites are aesthetically suited to a cemetery but they certainly will keep stock and people off the burial sites.

Trevor Hornby (Parks Senior Landscape Architect) has been working with contractors to establish the new service road and gate, fencing off existing burial sites and boundary fence.

This work is now almost complete.

A grazier will be sort in the next few months.
