Oakura Boardriders – From Surf to Snow

Published August 01, 2013

Since the July issue of the TOM winter has well and truly arrived. Our local mountain ski field has had some good days already and as we go to press a lot of our members have headed south for some epic skiing and better weather than the north island has had.

As a few members are getting ready to escape to warmer climes the local surfing scene saw the running of the Taranaki champs in stormy conditions at Fitzroy once again.

This contest had a far amount of luck attached to it with the conditions dictating some outcomes. Big congratulations to Ariana Shewry being the youngest competitor in the women’s division taking out 3rd place, I predict a big future for this young lady if she continues to compete like she is and our clubs next ASP competitor? Something to aim for Ariana!

Taranaki Champs Results

Men’s Open
1 Jarred Hancox
2 Keoene Campbell
3 Eli Smith
4 Isaac Kettle

Women’s Open
1 Thandi Tipene
2 Millie Crewe
3 Ariana Shewry
4 Zhana Hutchinson.

Coming up we have the New Zealand Home Loan Taranaki Surf Series being run at Fitzroy with a prize pool of $3000. The first one was run in good surf on Jul 13th and the nest dates are Aug 10th, Sep 7th and Oct 5th with divisions being open men’s, open women’s, under 14, U16 & U18. This is great to keep those competitive fires burning through the winter months.

The Oakura Board riders AGM is due late August. This will be advertised in the paper, on our Facebook site and by email so keep an eye open and come along for a social night and the election of officers etc.
